What comes to mind when you hear the words “morning ritual?”
Just hearing the words may bring up feelings from “What’s that?” to “I wouldn’t start my day without it” and many things in between.
Many of you may be thinking that it’s a great idea but “I just don’t have the time to add one more thing into my already jam-packed schedule.” If this is the case, I want to let you know that I have also been there.
Until recently, I had no idea the meaning of a morning ritual. My morning ritual would consist of getting started on all of the things that needed to be done. Many times this would happen without even energizing myself for the day. After all, isn’t life all about getting things done?
That was my old way of thinking and I feel grateful that I have changed my ways since then.
So, what if I were to tell you that creating a morning ritual has the ability to change your outlook on the day and it doesn’t have to be as hard as you think? You may be thinking that I have no idea what your days are like (and I don’t) but stick with me while I share what works for me along with other ideas that could create ease and flow in your morning.
While it was a bit rough at first, I made the decision to wake up earlier each morning. Yes, it’s hard to get out of bed early while it is still dark outside and everyone else in my house is still sleeping. But the benefit of creating that time for myself is well worth it and it does get easier the more you do it.
I would love to tell you that I wake up gradually without an alarm clock but that just isn’t the case. While my alarm does wake me up, it’s what I do after that which can determine how my day will look. I often will take time to set an intention for the day, even before I get out of bed. It may seem like a small step but it is an important one for me. One intention that I often set is, based on the crazy life that we live in, is to be present in my day. I don’t want to get to the end of my day and wonder how I got there.
Meditation is one of my favorite morning rituals. It has taken time to get where I am when it comes to meditation. Sitting for just two minutes felt so painful at first. I began to relax into meditation when I learned that it’s not all about stopping your thoughts. It’s more about observing them and letting them go. What works for me is to think of my thoughts as clouds in the sky just passing by. There is nothing that I need to do other than observe them and let them go.
Although there are many benefits to meditation, the greatest benefits to me are that it helps to quiet my mind from all of the daily noise, it helps me to feel more connected to myself and it gives me a greater appreciation for life.
Along with meditation, I have found that working with my Five Minute Journal has added so much to my life. The morning entry has me listing three things that I am grateful for along with three things that would make each day great. The evening entry has me sum up the day with three amazing things that happened that day. Without doubt, gratitude has been a life changer for me. Just ask my family!
So far I have shared what I add into my morning, but there is something I try to avoid. With wanting to start the day off on a positive note, I rarely watch the news or read the newspaper. At first, I was afraid that I would miss something or be out of the loop. Then I realized that I have so much more to offer this world if I am coming from a positive place. It’s as easy as that!
Creating a morning ritual is all about what works for you. The best way to create the ritual is to try things out and see how they resonate for you. Other ideas that could be used as part of a morning ritual are journaling, doing a few yoga poses or reading some inspirational writing.
