“To be beautiful means to be yourself. You don’t need to be accepted by others. You need to accept yourself.”
–Thich Nhat Hanh
What would your life be like if the only validation you needed was from yourself?
I know it can definitely be hard to imagine at times but in reality its just about taking that first step.
After all, didn’t you think that once you entered adulthood, trying to fit in would no longer be part of your life? Or was that wishful thinking?
The reality is everyone wants to belong. That desire is just human nature.
The concern is not our need to belong as much as it is what can happen along the way.
Do you lose a part of yourself when you are trying to fit the mold of what is acceptable? And who defines what is acceptable?
At times, getting caught up in what we wear, what activities the kids are involved in and how we present ourselves to the world is easy, and we forget who we are and what matters most to us.
The media tells us that age brings wisdom and a sense of confidence. While there’s truth in that, the deeper truth is belonging is a universal desire regardless of our age.
Looking back on my life, I can see many times when I made choices solely based on my desire to belong. Who doesn’t want to feel like they fit in?
Fast forward to today and I am in a much better place.
Yes, I still want to belong. But, I am much more aware of whether I am coming from a place of seeking external validation or whether I am making the choice because it feels like the right one for me.
Where in your life are you ready to let go of seeking external validation and start creating a life of self-acceptance that works for you? A life where you are excited to wake up each day.
